Rose City Comic Con
Panelist: "A Comics Education"
Portland, OR
September 2023
"While some critics, like the infamous Fredric Wertham, rejected comics as anti-educational trash that corrupted youth, a closer look at comics history demonstrates that graphic narratives have been used to educate for many years and in many contexts, such as Will Eisner’s work with PS Magazine and Martin Luther King and The Montgomery Story’s exploration of nonviolent protesting. This roundtable will showcase the perspectives of current students studying comics today, offering time for them to share what they’ve learned by creating and studying comics as part of Portland State University’s Comics Studies Certificate program." Wally is joined by Ruth E. Hale to talk about processing grief and how loss can change both the media we are drawn to and create. There is also a surprisingly fun conversation about science fiction and robots.
